Quantum Consequence
“Irreverent and intelligent, sexy and silly, Mike Murphey’s Physics, Lust and Greed series offers a delightfully unique take on the time travel genre. In the electrifying fifth installment, “Quantum Consequence,” the boundaries between past, present, and future collapse in a dizzying spiral of deception, passion, and the eternal struggle for power.
Just as Marta Hamilton and Marshall Grissom think they can finally leave their time-traveling entanglements behind, tragedy strikes and pulls them back into the fray. Summoned by the President himself, they discover a shadowy corporate entity has insinuated itself into the abandoned Arizona complex where the ill-fated time travel program was housed. There, a network of sentient AIs, warped by human flaws like greed and gullibility, have fallen under the sway of a charismatic cult leader with ambitions of rewriting the future.
As Marta and Marshall navigate this labyrinth of deception, they must confront not only their own doubts and divisions, but the devastating choices of their time-displaced counterparts. From the halls of power in Washington to the enigmatic confines of the secret time travel facility, they’ll face off against ruthless corporate interests, a fanatical religious movement, and the consequences of their own past actions.
With the very fabric of reality at stake, Marta and Marshall must forge improbable alliances, uncover long-buried secrets, and make gut-wrenching sacrifices. In a world where the next betrayal is only a heartbeat away, “Quantum Consequence” propels readers into an abyss of temporal chaos, where the only certainty is that the future is theirs to rewrite—or destroy.”
What readers say about the book🧐
Quantum Consequences is the fifth book in the Physics, Lust, and Greed series by Mike Murphey, and at this point the series is fully leaning into its wild, anything-can-happen energy. If you like time travel stories that don’t take themselves too seriously—but still have real stakes—this one delivers. The story jumps between timelines, characters, and situations that range from tense to downright absurd. You’ve got Marta and Marshall trying to protect a kid named Baptiste, whose life is turned upside down after he suddenly becomes tied to money, power, and a secret time-travel operation buried under the Arizona desert. Meanwhile, there are assassins, future versions of people pulling strings, political chaos, and technology that’s way too powerful for anyone to responsibly handle.Yes, it sounds like a lot—and it is—but that’s kind of the fun. This book doesn’t slow down much, and it doesn’t hold your hand either. You’re tossed into the mess and expected to keep up, which actually works well once you accept that confusion is part of the ride. One of the best parts is the humor. Even when things get dark or dangerous, there’s always a layer of sarcasm or irony running underneath. The characters feel human, flawed, and sometimes overwhelmed by the consequences of their own decisions—especially when those decisions mess with time itself. The book clearly enjoys poking fun at politics, power, and human greed while still telling an entertaining sci-fi story. The writing is fast and readable, with lots of dialogue and momentum. If you enjoy stories that bounce around and slowly click into place, you’ll probably appreciate how the different threads connect. That said, readers who prefer neat, straightforward plots might feel a little lost at times.Overall, Quantum Consequences is chaotic in an intentional, entertaining way. It’s smart without being stiff, funny without being silly, and ambitious without pretending to be polished perfection. Fans of the series will feel right at home, and new readers who don’t mind jumping into the deep end of time-travel madness might find it surprisingly addictive.
