Windflower series, All That Glitters [Ottawa Press and Publishing].But b’ys, there’s no panic, no sense of urgency. Neither Wince Windflower, nor his sidekick, Eddie Tizzard is standing in the street — or down on the wharf, for that matter — ready to slap leather, outdraw and plug some squinty-eyed villain.Where are they?Having a mug up.“Tizzard went up and grabbed their food, and for a few moments they ignored the suspense and danger that was awaiting them and they were just two friends enjoying a late snack or early breakfast together.”See, no panic.Once upon a time, several books ago, Winston Windflower was Canada’s most domesticated Mountie, living in Grand Bank with his honey Shelia, his two children — young daughters Stella and Amelia Louise — and his dog and … well, maybe not “his” cat.Now, Canada’s most domesticated Mountie is Corporal Eddie Tizzard — wed to Carrie Evanchuk, his ducky from another province, and father of Hughie, his toddler offspring.Why the switcheroo?Well, Wince is no longer a member of the RCMP. He’s now the Community Safety Officer for Grand Bank and environs and is Sarge only because local folks refuse to drop the title.So, how come Wince and Eddie are together at dawn on the cusp of a showdown?Diamonds, that’s how come. And, days before the showdown signaling sunrise, what seems like a mysterious death by diamonds back in Grand Banks.All the expected regular local characters appear in this Windflower adventure. There’s even a cameo appearance of an erstwhile villain whose decomposing phantom shows up in one of Wince’s dreams. (Don’t forget Windflower is a dreamweaver like his Uncle Frank and Auntie Marie before him.)Also, there’s a dream harp seal, a cocky wit, who makes wisecracks regarding his “wet suit”.Oh, and Auntie Marie materializes as a dream moose.B’ys, as regular Windflower readers you’re familiar with the antics of the wraiths and critters that populate Wince the Dreamweaver’s noggin.Sadly, in early pages there’s a tragic example of an event that happens all too often on Newfoundland’s highways. Despite Tizzard’s cautioning, an RCMP officer fails to mind the moose.Just think, you and I have been reading Sgt. Windflower stories for a decade or more. Tempus, as tis said, friggin’ fugits. However, I — we? — haven’t tired of the continuing Windflower saga.(Mike old man, I look forward to Sgt. Windflower’s next outing. I’m sure you don’t intend to retire Wince after a baker’s dozen.)I’m about to break an oath. I know I’ve promised I wouldn’t mention it again but …… but how in the name of sweet Billy-jesus, can anyone stow away as much grub — from doughnuts to scrunchions — as the cast of characters always willing to dab their arses down for a lunch in these books?Hey, here’s tempus fugitting like a jet plane again. The sun’s rising over Petty Harbour. Wince and Eddie have slurped their last sup of morning coffee …… Showdown time!Epilogue: No surprise, the villains are vanquished. Winston Windflower, one time a stalwart Mountie from Pink Lake, Alberta, conquers his feline fears and finally bonds — up to point — with Molly, the imperious pet pussycat from Grand Bank, Newfoundland.…and squeezes his honey and plays with his kids.…and walks his dog.…and sits down for a nosh.Thank you for reading.
